According to French public health authorities, there have been 116 confirmed cases of chikungunya in Mayotte from 1 January 2025 to 4 May 2025. This number includes 57 locally acquired cases.

Advice for Travellers

Chikungunya is an infection spread by mosquito bites and can cause a high temperature (fever) and intense pain in your joints.  Two new chikungunya vaccines have recently been licenced in the UK.

The mosquitoes which transmit chikungunya bite during the day, between dawn and dusk.  They are particularly persistent and aggressive.

If you are travelling to an area where chikungunya is present, you are potentially at risk of infection and should be aware of this infection.

If you develop a fever either during or after travelling to an affected area, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible and give details of your recent travel history.
