New Outbreak of Ebola in North Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo

01 Aug 2018

The Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo  has announced a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the country. Twenty-six cases, including 20 deaths have been identified in Mangina, Mabalako Health Zone in North Kivu Province in the east of the country.

This latest outbreak comes a week after the recent outbreak in Equateur Province was declared over. At this stage, it not known if the two outbreaks are connected.

Advice to travellers

When Ebola outbreaks occur, generally the risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola virus disease is extremely low.

Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
