Ebola in Equateur Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (Update 5)

24 Jul 2018

On 24 July 2018, the World Health Organisation reported that the outbreak of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was over.

The Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congohad previously reported (in French) a total of 53 cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Equateur Province. Of these cases, 38 were confirmed and 15 were probable. There were 29 deaths.

All of the cases were reported from three Health Zones: Bikoro (21), Iboko (28) and Wangata (4).

Advice to travellers

When Ebola outbreaks occur, generally the risk of travellers becoming infected or developing Ebola virus disease is extremely low.

Travellers returning from tropical countries should always seek rapid medical attention if they develop flu-like symptoms (such as fever, headache, diarrhoea or general malaise) within three weeks after return, and be reminded to mention to their health care provider that they have recently travelled.
