Azerbaijan and Tajikistan declared Free of Malaria

31 Mar 2023

The World Health Organization (WHO) certified the countries of Azerbaijan and Tajikistan free of malaria on 29 March 2023.

The last case of locally transmitted malaria in Azerbaijan was in 2012, and in Tajikistan was in 2014.

Malaria elimination certification is granted by the WHO when a country has:

  • shown that transmission of malaria in that country has been interrupted for at least three consecutive years
  • demonstrated the capacity to prevent malaria transmission re-occurring

See the Malaria page for further information on the disease.
