Zika Virus in Dominican Republic
25 Jan 2016
The Ministry of Health has reported to the media that Zika virus (ZIKV) is circulating in Dominican Republic. Laboratories at CDC in the US have confirmed ZIKV in 10 out of 27 samples taken from suspected cases.
ZIKV has been identified in the National District the municipalities of Santo Domingo Norte, Jimani and Santa Cruz de Barahona.
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Due to the possible link between Zika virus infection and birth defects, pregnant women are urged to be particularly vigilant in preventing mosquito bites.
Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
