Dengue Fever in Thailand

25 Jun 2015

The media has reported on an increase in dengue virus infections in Krabi, a province in southern Thailand east of the island of Phuket. Since January 2015, more than 400 cases of dengue fever, including one fatal case have been recorded.

Krabi is among the top ten worst dengue affected provinces in Thailand; Phuket is rated 22 out of 76 provinces. Health officials report that the situation is under control and have implemented mosquito breeding site reduction as further rainfall is predicted.

The situation in Phuket is slightly less of a concern; around 160 suspected cases of dengue fever have been reported since the beginning of 2015. This compares with 200 for the same time period of 2014.

Advice for Travellers

Krabi and Phuket are popular destinations with UK travellers and they should be aware of the risk of dengue fever.

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
