As of 1 May 2015, a total of 27 cases of hepatitis A have been reported in US travellers who went to Tulum, Mexico. All travelled between 15 February and 20 March 2015.

Tulum is located on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo. This area is a popular tourist destination and is also known as Riviera Maya. The island of Cozumal, which is popular with UK travellers, is located off the mainland in this area. The popular resort of Cancun is further north of the Riviera Maya.

Advice for Travellers

Vaccination against hepatitis A is usually recommended for travellers visiting Mexico. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food and water precautions and personal hygiene.
