Measles in Pakistan

26 May 2014

Measles virus infection is an ongoing problem for Pakistan. More than 25 000 measles cases and 321 measles related deaths were recorded in 2013. To date in 2014, 1329 confirmed measles cases have been reportedĀ in Pakistan.

Measles vaccine is included in the Expanded Programme of Immunisation which has been running since1978, however, immunisation rates are low. At present 53% of children are not immunised against any diseases.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
