Measles in the United Kingdom (Update)

09 Jul 2013

Public Health Wales has declared the measles outbreak in the Swansea area over. The outbreak was first reported in November 2012, and a total of 1219 cases were registered.

As there have been no laboratory-confirmed measles cases linked to the outbreak since 22 May 2013, the outbreak is considered over.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
