Cholera in Cuba

09 Jul 2012

The Ministry of Health of Cuba has reported approximately 1000 cases of acute watery diarrhoea mainly in the province of Granma. Fifty three of the cases have been confirmed as cholera and of the confirmed cholera cases there have been 3 deaths in elderly patients.

The source of infection is not yet clear but may be from contaminated water from local wells of that province.

Advice for Travellers

The risk of cholera to travellers in negligible. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
