Mumps in the United Kingdom (Scotland)

21 Feb 2012

An outbreak of mumps has been reported among students at Glasgow University in the west of Scotland. A health alert was reissued to students advising them to contact their GP for MMR vaccine if they have not previously received two doses.

The outbreak was first reported 7 February 2012, and to date 30 cases have been recorded. University officials report that the outbreak appears to be leveling off.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
