Hepatitis E Virus in Niger (Update 2)

The United Nations reports via reliefweb that hepatitis E continues to be transmitted in the region of Diffa. From 19 April to 12 October 2017 a total of 1 987 cases including 38 deaths has been reported. Women and those aged 15 and over are the most affected.
Advice to travellers
The highest risk of infection is present for those travelling to regions with poor sanitation and hygiene. To prevent infection travellers should be advised to:
- Practice safe food and water hygiene.
- Avoid raw/undercooked pork/game products and shellfish.
No vaccine is available for use in the UK.
