Dengue in the USA: California

As of 3 November 2023, public health officials have reported 2 cases of locally-acquired dengue in California. The first case was reported in Pasadena on 20 October 2023 and the second was reported in Long Beach on 1 November 2023.

These are the first locally acquired cases of dengue to reported in California. 

Advice for Travellers

Dengue is an infection spread by mosquito bites and can cause a severe flu-like illness. It has occurred in the USA in recent years.

The mosquitoes which transmit dengue bite during the day, between dawn and dusk.  They are particularly persistent and aggressive.

If you are travelling to an affected region, you are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.

If you develop a high temperature (fever) either during or after travelling to an affected area, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible and give details of your recent travel history.
