Mumps in the United States

10 Mar 2014

An outbreak of mumps has been reported in Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio in the midwestern United States.

As of 7 March 2014, a total of 17 cases have been recorded; 7 females and 6 males aged between 18 and 22 years. All the cases have tested positive for mumps and most report having received their childhood immunisations.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
