Typhoid in Zambia

05 Jan 2012

An outbreak of typhoid fever has been reported from Mufulira in central Zambia. The outbreak began last month and to date, 1174 typhoid cases have been recorded. Last week 400 cases were identified.

The source of the outbreak is thought to be perforated water pipes that has lead to contamination of drinking water. The public health measures that the government has put in place will continue for the duration of the rainy season in an effort to contain the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Vaccination against typhoid is usually recommended for travellers to Zambia. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
