Cholera is an ongoing problem in Ghana and there has been a sharp increase in cases recently; more than 1000 cases have been recorded in the last three weeks.

As of 18 August 2014, a total of 6018 cases and 45 related deaths have been recorded nationally. The ongoing outbreak in Greater Accra region accounts for the majority of cases and deaths. Other regions reporting cholera cases include: Eastern region (264 cases), Western regions (23 cases) and Ashanti region (10 cases).

The Ghana Red Cross Society plans to support the Ministry of Health’s response to the cholera outbreak by intensifying social mobilization activities to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
