Malaria in Thailand

Malaria surveillance is being stepped up in Thailand as the rainy season begins and mosquito breeding sites increase. From the beginning of the year until 13 June 2014, a total of 11 036 malaria cases have been recorded nationally. The worst affected region of the country is the south followed by the North, Northeast, and Central regions. The five provinces reporting most Malaria cases are Ubol Ratchathani, Tak, Yala, Songkhla, and Kanchanaburi.
Advice for Travellers
Antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended for the border areas of Thailand only and bite avoidance measures are recommended for the remainder of the country. This advice remains unchanged, however, the situation will be monitored. This media report reminds travellers of the importance of awareness of malaria and good bite avoidance measures in the low to no risk areas of malarious destinations.
