Meningococcal Disease in Uganda

The Ministry of Health for Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of meningitis in the country which began in January 2014. A total of 43 cases have been identified. The worst affected area is Adjumani district in northwestern Uganda with 20 cases, followed by Arua with 19 cases.

The Minstry of Health has dispatched a team of experts to support local health workers in the affected area and drug supplies have been released. An immunisation campaign is being organised in the affected areas. Official confirmation by WHO is awaited.

Uganda is a country at risk of meningococcal meningitis outbreaks and quadrivalent vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk.
