West Nile Fever in Europe (and other)

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published their weekly Situation Update on West Nile Fever. As of 22 August 2014, 31 human cases have been reported since the beginning of this years transmission season.

This week, three confirmed West Nile infections were reported in EU countries; one in Vienna, Austria and two in East Attica, Greece. Greece also reported one probable case in Ileia.

Twenty seven confirmed and probble cases have been reported from neighbouring countries:

  • Russia,Samarskaya and Belgorodskaya oblasts (7)
  • Serbia,Grad Beograd, Juzno-backi district and Nisavski districts (5)
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska area (13)
  • Israel,Netanya (Central District) and Tel Aviv (2)

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware of the seasonal risk of West Nile Fever in Europe and are advised to take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
